‘Mom’s unconscious! We have no food!’ A starving child’s desperate call on a secret number just interrupted a billion-dollar deal. The CEO who answered is her only hope—and he doesn’t even know she exists…//…The mahogany boardroom of Crawford Industries fell silent. At forty, James Crawford, the formidable CEO, was closing a billion-dollar deal when his private line buzzed. An unknown number. “Crawford Industries,” he answered. Instead of an analyst, a small, trembling voice broke the static. “Please… I’m sorry… I need the ‘first contact’.”
James paused. “I… I think you have the wrong number, sweetheart.”
“Please don’t hang up!” the child cried. “I found your number in Mommy’s work phone. She listed you as her ‘first contact.’ She said if we were ever really, really scared… we should call this number and say a special word.”
James’s chest tightened. A code word? Through the phone, he could hear other children crying.
“My name is Madison,” the voice said. “Mommy came home from her night-cleaning job, but she’s very sick and I can’t wake her up. We’re all alone here, and we’re really scared.” A cleaner. An emergency contact. A code word. None of it made sense… until she told him her mother’s name.
Rachel Santos… The name hit James like a physical blow. The woman who had vanished from his life… eleven years ago. He gripped the phone, the math clicking into place with horrifying clarity.
Madison. Almost eleven. And he knew, in that single moment, his entire world was about to change…

For a man who built empires from chaos, James Crawford suddenly felt powerless. His board stared at him, waiting for him to finish the deal, unaware that his world had just tilted on its axis.
He turned away from the room’s glass wall, voice steady but cold. “Excuse me, gentlemen. Something’s come up.”

Before anyone could speak, he was gone—out the door, phone clutched tight, mind racing.

“Madison,” he said softly, pushing through the marble lobby toward his car. “You did the right thing calling me. Tell me—where do you live?”

A sniffle. “Um… it’s Building 12, apartment 4B. The Oakview Complex.”
He froze. Oakview—one of his company’s subsidized housing sites. Rachel had been cleaning offices owned by his own corporation.

“Stay on the phone, sweetheart. Don’t hang up.”

“I won’t.”

He could hear the faint sound of a clock ticking, a little brother whimpering, and a woman’s ragged breathing in the background.

“Is Mommy still breathing?”
“I—I think so. But she’s so cold…”

James hit the elevator button again and again, heart hammering. “Help is coming, I promise. I’m sending someone right now.”

But he didn’t send someone. He went himself.
