Elvis Presley’s 1962 Private Plane Has Been Sold, Revealing a Remarkable Interior

Elvis Presley is remembered around the world as one of the most influential musicians of all time. His unmistakable voice, groundbreaking performances.

And timeless hits reshaped popular music and culture forever. Yet, Elvis was more than just a legendary singer and entertainer. He was also known for his refined taste, love of luxury, and keen eye for style and design.

From his iconic fashion choices to his carefully curated homes, Elvis paid close attention to his surroundings. One of the clearest examples of this lesser-known side of the King of Rock and Roll can be found not on stage or in a recording studio, but high above the ground—inside his private airplane.

A Personal Jet Fit for a Music Icon

In 1962, at the height of his fame, Elvis Presley purchased his own aircraft, a Lockheed JetStar. At the time, owning a private jet was an extraordinary symbol of success, reserved for major corporations and a small number of global elites.

Elvis, however, was in a position few entertainers had ever reached, both financially and culturally. Rather than using the aircraft in its standard configuration.

Elvis had the jet extensively customized to meet his personal tastes and comfort needs. The modifications transformed the JetStar into a luxurious airborne retreat that reflected his personality and lifestyle.

Interior Design That Reflected Elvis’s Taste

Stepping inside Elvis Presley’s private jet was unlike entering any typical aircraft. The interior was designed to feel more like a stylish living room than a means of transportation. Rich materials dominated the space, creating an atmosphere of warmth and elegance.

The floors were covered in thick, plush carpeting, while the walls featured polished hardwood paneling. Seating throughout the cabin was upholstered in deep crimson velvet.

A bold yet sophisticated choice that echoed Elvis’s love for dramatic, high-end design. The color palette and textures worked together to create a sense of comfort and exclusivity.

Unlike modern jets that often divide space into multiple compartments, Elvis’s JetStar featured one main seating area designed for relaxation and socializing. The arrangement allowed passengers to move freely, converse comfortably, and enjoy the journey in a relaxed setting.

A Private Space Above the Clouds

Elvis did not travel alone. His father, Vernon Presley, was present on board when the jet made its first flight, marking a meaningful family moment. Over the years, the aircraft transported Elvis to various destinations, serving both practical and personal purposes.

Although the jet was technologically advanced for its time, Elvis ensured that luxury remained the primary focus. The cabin included a television system, which was considered state-of-the-art during the early 1960s.

This allowed passengers to enjoy entertainment while in flight, an impressive feature at the time.

Behind the main seating area, a small kitchen, or galley, was installed. While compact, it was designed to provide basic convenience and comfort.

The presence of a microwave—unusual for aircraft of that era—highlighted how carefully the jet was customized.

The Kitchen and the Legend of Elvis’s Favorite Foods

Elvis Presley was famously passionate about food, and his eating habits have become part of popular culture. While there is no evidence that specific meals were prepared aboard the jet, it is easy to imagine him enjoying familiar comforts during travel.

The kitchen area was functional for its time, allowing food to be warmed and served during flights. Even decades later, the galley remains an interesting feature, offering a glimpse into how private air travel was experienced in the early days of celebrity aviation.

A Lavatory Designed with Comfort in Mind

The aircraft also featured a private lavatory, designed with more space and comfort than those found on commercial flights.

The sink and fixtures were more refined than standard airplane amenities, and velvet accents were used to maintain consistency with the rest of the cabin’s design.

Compared to the tight and utilitarian bathrooms common on charter flights, Elvis’s jet offered a noticeably more comfortable experience, reinforcing the idea that no detail was overlooked.

What Happened After Elvis’s Death?

Elvis Presley passed away in 1977 at the age of 42, leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to captivate fans worldwide. Following his death, the Lockheed JetStar he owned was no longer used for flight.

Instead of being dismantled or lost to time, the aircraft was preserved. For decades, it remained on display in Roswell, New Mexico, where it was placed along a roadside as a tourist attraction. Visitors from around the world stopped to see the jet, drawn by its connection to one of music’s greatest icons.

The plane’s exterior, painted in a muted red tone, showed signs of age but remained in surprisingly solid condition. Despite spending years grounded in the desert climate, the aircraft retained much of its original structure and charm.

A Historic Aircraft Finds a New Owner

Even after more than thirty years on display in New Mexico, Elvis Presley’s private jet continued to attract attention. In January 2023, the aircraft was sold at auction during the Mecum Kissimmee Collector Vehicle Auction in Florida.

The jet was purchased for $260,000 by an anonymous bidder who participated by telephone and identified as an Elvis enthusiast. The sale marked a new chapter in the aircraft’s long and unusual history.

The auction did not include engines, meaning the plane is not currently flight-ready. However, its historical and cultural value remains significant. As a preserved artifact, the jet offers a rare and tangible connection to Elvis’s life beyond the stage.
