THE PHONE MYSTERY: Police have just found a phone 500m from the scene of Samantha Murphy’s disappearance, containing a 3-minute video but at the 17th second…
In the latest development in the search for Samantha Murphy, the 51-year-old mother who vanished while jogging near Ballarat, Victoria Police have recovered a mobile phone that may hold critical new evidence. The device was found approximately 500 meters from the location where Samantha was last seen, buried partially under leaf litter in a narrow bush track.

Forensic teams immediately secured the phone, and preliminary analysis revealed a 3-minute video recorded on the device. The footage initially appears to show a familiar trail through the bush, with sunlight filtering through the trees and the faint sound of birds.
However, at exactly the 17th second, the video captures something highly unusual:
-
The camera suddenly shifts, as if knocked or grabbed, showing a figure in dark clothing looming in the frame.
-
The figure’s face is blurred and partially obscured, but the posture is deliberate, moving toward the camera with an almost predatory gait.
-
Audio analysts noted a brief sound of heavy breathing, followed by what may be a faint whisper — though it is indistinct and cannot yet be identified.
After the 17th second, the footage resumes normally but shows a trail disturbed, leaves scattered, and footprints not belonging to Samantha visible in the dirt.
Police caution that the video does not definitively indicate what happened to Samantha, but it is being treated as a high-priority lead. Investigators are working to enhance the footage and extract as much detail as possible, including attempting facial recognition and gait analysis on the blurred figure.
Authorities have also appealed to the public, urging anyone who may have seen unfamiliar individuals near the trail on the morning of February 4th to come forward.
Detectives described the discovery as “potentially the most revealing clue in weeks,” but emphasized that the case remains open and ongoing.
“Every second of that footage is being analyzed with the utmost urgency. The 17th second in particular could be the key to understanding what happened in the critical moments before Samantha disappeared,” said a Victoria Police spokesperson.
Search efforts continue across Ballarat and surrounding bushland, with investigators now focused on tracing who may have handled or recorded the phone, and whether the person in dark clothing is connected to the disappearance.
